Testicular Ultrasound This examination produces
images of your testicles and scrotum using inaudible sound waves in a
frequency range far above the range of human hearing. Ultrasound imaging
can help determine the cause of testicular pain or swelling including an
absent or undescended testicle, testicular torsion, abnormal blood vessels
or a lump or tumor.
What to expect The
examination will be performed by a technologist who is an expert in using
ultrasound. A hypo-allergenic, water-soluble gel will be applied to your
scrotum to prevent air from getting between the ultrasound source and your
skin. A small probe, called a transducer, will be passed over the surface
of your scrotum, producing a painless sensation of light pressure on your
skin. The exam typically takes about 30 minutes.
The examination
results will be evaluated by a radiologist skilled in interpreting
sonograms. The results will be sent to your referring physician within
five working days.
Patient preparation No
patient preparation is required.
Side effects and
complications No side effects or complications should be
expected.
Follow-up care The exam itself
requires no follow-up care.
